Ras Ammar Nsoroma will be at MNCHE doing portraits & more!

An artist known for his murals, Ras Ammar Nsoroma was born Kevin Wayne Tate on June 20, 1967 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. When he was only a teenager, Nsoroma became aware of the work of Reynaldo Hernandez, an inner-city mural artist, which inspired him. Nsoroma graduated from the Milwaukee High School of the Arts in 1985 after completing his first mural as a senior and attended the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. In the late 1980s, Nsoroma moved to Chicago and studied at Chicago's School of the Art Institute. He returned to Wisconsin and began working as an artist, designing three-dimensional murals on the Fond du Lac Avenue overpass for the north and south wing walls and bridge abutments. In 2000, two of Nsoroma's murals were nominated for inclusion in the book, Walls of Heritage, Walls of Pride: African American Murals, a collection of 200 murals spanning three decades of African American mural art. In 2004, Nsoroma designed a mural to celebrate the radio station 1290 WMCS-AM's 25th anniversary of African American community programming; entitled The Tradition Continues. Nsoroma utilized photographs and created a compilation of twenty-five portraits of men and women who participated in the growth of the station. Nsoroma has painted more than forty murals, including pieces in Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington D.C., as well as his hometown of Milwaukee. http://www.thehistorymakers.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WISCONSIN AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN’S CENTER RECEIVES STATE TOURISM GRANT

Secy. Stephanie Klett presents Big Check to promote Milwaukee Natural Hair Care Expo

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (March 23, 2011) -- Department of Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett presented a $12,960 Joint Effort Marketing (JEM) grant to the Wisconsin African American Women’s Center to help promote the Milwaukee Natural Hair Care Expo to be held on June 26, 2011. The national event is expanding its roster of cities to add Milwaukee and is expected to draw 1,500 attendees resulting in a projected economic impact of $123,750 for the area.
“This is a family-friendly event that has already enjoyed solid success in Baltimore, Raleigh-Durham and Cleveland. We are pleased that this unique cultural event is now offered in Milwaukee,” Secretary Klett said. “A JEM grant will go a long way to help the Wisconsin African American Center’s boost attendance by raising the event’s profile through the power of marketing and promotion. In the end, Milwaukee stands to benefit from additional traveler spending in the downtown area.”
The Joint Effort Marketing (JEM) Grant Program funded 51 projects totaling $1.14 million in fiscal year 2010. Visitor expenditures driven by the marketing from these projects exceeded $30 million.
The National Hair Care Expo features local and international speakers addressing health topics and natural hair care. A major highlight of the Milwaukee expo includes A Natural Hair and Fashion Show featuring fashion designers and salons from the Midwest. The natural hair and fashion show will be produced by Andre Ellis Theatre Company. Local and national businesses involved in the expo include Milwaukee’s own, Kosmik Kare Day Spa and DreadznHeadz of Baltimore, Maryland. African-American women and families can participate in a variety of hair care demonstrations, fashion, holistic health, and cultural workshops offered by expert instructors and educators.
The JEM grant will assist organizers to execute their advertising and promotion campaign in a large multi-state region that includes Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, St. Louis and Louisville. Day-trippers from Racine and Madison are also included in the target audience. Their multi-faceted marketing approach includes direct mail flyers distributed to Midwest salons and health centers, social media, public relations outreach, print and radio advertising.

JEM grant funds are available to non-profit organizations for the promotion of Wisconsin tourism events and destinations. The state can fund up to 75 percent

TRANSITION OR CHOP? Let's Chat...Live

To Chop or NOT or CHOP that is the question.....
So I thought to myself, what if someone wanted to know what to do or how to go about transitioning from permed hair or extensions to "natural" - So we googled it! lol! There are so many endless amount of videos and blogs and articles and testimonies about how different people took different paths going natural, or BACK to natural!
There are many different factors that can come into play when a women considers...Its not just a physical change. There is sooooooo much more to it......As some of you know..

Some people let it lock, others may braid and let it grow-out, while some brave individuals just CHOP IT OFF! Its whats become know as 'THE BIG CHOP' - Its an amazing and growing trend and you find everyone has their own story to tell about why they did it. Its a very empowering and sometimes emotional conversation. We are planning a very special , interactive chat session at the Milwaukee Natural Hair EXPO  inviting people to talk about how & why they transitioned to natural, chemical free hair!
We plan to share some of your the content & stories (with your permission of course) we get here on this blog at the Milwaukee Natural Hair Care Expo

Its a celebration. Its a struggle. Its a reflection. Its personal. Its public........It's a process.
& We are looking for people (YOU) to share how & why they decided to grow natural! ;)
Did it effect your JOB?
What did your MAN think?
Do people ASK you questions or compliment you?
What made you decide to cut ALL of your hair off??

This also a very critical conversation to have with our younger ladies and daughters. WE are getting generations involved because its about self image, self esteem & breaking stereo types as well. So feel free to bring your youth!!!

Do you watch the food channel? Have you ever been to a cooking class? Another question.... Have you ever entered a cooking contest???

Some people have a natural gift in the kitchen, others....well...you know.
The public is becoming more and more health concious when it comes to eating and even eating out. There are plenty of natural doctors and practionteers spreading information around the community about the urgency of our health disparities. FOOD is MEDICINE and too often people forget that the essential medicines our bodies need come from the mother earth. We have to start that basic comunity education about indoor & outdoor gardening, herbal remedies and co-ops from a grass root level.

Spring is coming and so is planting season for most of us , so we will be sharing our gardening stories, photos, videos and more! Please free to join in! We are Growing!

The Shopping Don't Stop!

Don't you just love finding unique books, art, clothes and other items at street festivals and conferences? We have some of the most creative vendors out on the circuit dealing with natural hair and healthy lifestyle. Innovative people from all over the country travel to sell, buy, and market their great products at several different festivals , especially in the summer time! What are some of your favorite festivals? Learning about all the new festivals and cultural events usually help promote entrepreneurs , artists & also helps cities attract visitors and business. There are several huge festivals and some small 'just getting started' events & expos that are sure to interest most any family , church group , study group, business organization or individual who is looking for something fun but also educational to do! We want to know about the events coming up in your area! Feel free to promote , share the information & invite us all! ;)

Either doing hands on services or vending products at events is a good way for some people to make income on the side doing arts or crafts that they truly love. In times like these people are going back to communal shopping, recycling and cooperative economic ways to maintain. Events that help to connect independent retailers, consumers , distributors etc grow beyond just that particular event. Professional networking and business relationships are established that last and grow after the event is over. People are encouraged to spend 'black' dollars with black people, this is an easy way to give your hard earned money to people who you know deserve it and appreciate it. So support the vendors when you go to events, stop and chat with them, learn their stories and how you can help each other along the way! You may be surprised! And you may find something you can treasure forever!

We are looking forward to some of the best of the best in vending and educational workshops at our Milwaukee Natural Hair Care Expo! People are coming from several different cities to participate!
Look forward to:
FOOD
JEWELERY
ART
MUSIC & BOOKS
HEALTHY BEAUTY , SKIN & HAIR PRODUCTS
CUSTOM CLOTHING
HEALTH INFORMATION & SERVICES
SPA & HAIR SERVICES
& SO MUCH MORE....

If you know of any SERIOUS VENDORS or would like to suggest or are one yourself: please email milwaukenhce@gmail.com ASAP for details.

TEACH Self-Love

Art by Andrea Pippin

The message in this artwork is strong and urgent, but also very simple. We must reprogram our daughters and sons to love themselves. If you are not careful the media , the schools and churches will have your children with a damaged sense of self identity and pride. Our "HAIRitage" is more than about hair and hair styles. Its a fact that we have to raise the standard for ourselves and our children. Be proud of your own features and textures! That's what we must tell our young queens who struggle with self esteem and who are sexually uncertain while being forced to grow up so fast. Take a look at the small examples you are setting for the ones that are watching you.....They are always watching even when you think they are not...
Take bold steps for our children & set the examples of self love
role modeling & mentoring really does start at home.

At the Natural Hair Care Expo we will have information and possibly presentations or live demonstrations about taking care of infant and children skin & hair, what products are safe and how you can communicate better about these sensitive issues with your youth, students, children and family. There is pressure from all directions to straighten , press, perm, put a relaxer , put some weave in etc ,etc, etc....

We want to talk about it! When do you think is too young for chemicals in a child's head?  Where do we continue to get the ideas that our natural curly, kinky, nappy hair is not good enough or won't be accepted as beautiful and by who????? How do you feel about black blonde's?

ALSO:
Dr. Kanika Jamila co-convener of the M.N.H.C.E is also a licensed esthetician and specializes in helping her clients overcome a variety of skin issues. She also is partnered with the Wisconsin Children & Family Services where she assists new parents and racially mixed families on skin & hair treatments. Wisc. Children & Family Services will be at the event to provide information on adoption and foster parenting which we know is needed badly in the black community nation wide.
